HOUSE FIRE NEAR DAYTONA BEACH SHORES CLAIMS LIFE OF WOMAN, 70

An early-morning house fire Monday near Daytona Beach Shores took the life of a 70-year-old woman.

There were no immediate signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances at the home on Gladys Terrace, where firefighters and deputies responded to a 5:08 a.m. 911 call from a neighbor who said he spotted flames inside the house through a window and saw smoke coming out through a vent in the roof.

Responding firefighters found the victim unresponsive. A firefighter pulled her from the house and attempted life-saving measures but pronounced her deceased at 5:23 a.m. The victim’s identity is not being released at this time pending notification of her next of kin. ***Update: Next-of-kin of the deceased, identified as 70-year-old Carol Drawdy of 2828 Gladys Terrace, has been notified of her death.

The scene was turned over to the state fire marshal’s office for official determination of the cause. A cat who survived the fire was recovered from the home.
