PROLIFIC IDENTITY THIEF, FRAUD SUSPECT JULIAN RUTLAND ARRESTED IN LINE AT DELTONA WALMART

An identity thief wanted across Florida for years was arrested this afternoon as he stood in line at a Deltona Walmart, where a store associate recognized his face and called Volusia County Sheriff’s Office detectives.

Julian Rutland, 34 (DOB 10/5/1982), wanted on a litany of fraud- and identity-theft-related charges in Volusia County and across Florida, was arrested around 3:30 p.m. at the Walmart at 101 Howland Blvd.

Sheriff’s detectives had reason to believe Rutland would show up at that store, and they had circulated his photo among the store associates, asking anyone who spotted him to call in a tip. When an associate made the call Tuesday, one of the lead detectives on the case showed up at the stor, quickly recognized Rutland standing in line and took him into custody immediately. At this time, Rutland is being questioned at the Sheriff’s Office Operations Center in Daytona Beach. He will be transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail shortly thereafter.

Detectives estimate Rutland may be responsible for approximately $500,000 in fraud reported in Volusia County alone. He also has warrants dating back to 2012 in Pasco and Hillsborough counties, and was caught on camera as a suspect in a 2014 mail theft case in Flagler County. The full extent of his fraudulent enterprise is yet to be determined.

Rutland was Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood’s SCUMBAG of the Week on Aug. 10: https://www.facebook.com/VolusiaSheriff/posts/1521104507928746. And his photos were previously released on May 11 in an attempt to track him down: https://www.facebook.com/VolusiaSheriff/posts/1427178760654655
