SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO HOST 5 SITES FOR DRUG TAKE-BACK DAY, SAT., OCT. 28

If you have unwanted or expired prescription medicine at home, you can bring it to one of the Sheriff’s Office locations in Volusia County on Saturday, Oct. 28, as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. No questions asked. This is a great way to prevent drug addiction, overdose deaths or accidental ingestion by children.

Drug Take-Back Day offers Volusia County residents the opportunity to clean out their medicine cabinets and bring unused, unwanted or expired medication – safely and anonymously --  to the Sheriff’s Office drop-off sites from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year on April 29, U.S. donors turned in more prescription drugs on Drug Take-Back Day than at any of the 12 previous Drug Take-Back Day events. Since the twice-a-year event began in September 2010, more than 8.1 million pounds (4,052 tons) of prescription drugs were turned in and destroyed.

The goal of Drug Take-Back Day is to help the U.S. address the important public health and safety issue of drug addiction. Studies show that most abused prescription drugs come from the medicine cabinets of friends and family.

For those who miss Saturday’s event, the Sheriff’s Office offers a continuous program where residents can drop off unwanted prescription drugs at a district office or make arrangements to have a deputy pick up their unwanted prescription medicine by calling the Sheriff’s Office’s Communications Center (386-248-1777).
