Man charged in pistol-whipping, attack on teens in DeBary

IN CUSTODY: Detectives identified Marquevis W. Chance, 39, as the suspect who assaulted teenagers in DeBary last night.

Deputies responded to the incident around 7:45 p.m. near the community park at Lazio Circle and Kalin Street, DeBary. The victims, a boyfriend and girlfriend each 17 years of age, reported an adult male suspect approached, hit the male victim in the head with a handgun, and pointed the gun at his girlfriend.

After the attack, the suspect forced the victims to undress, then took their clothes and left the area.

The male victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment of a laceration to his head. Additional deputies, K-9 units, Air One and other VSO resources all responded to the area as the investigation developed.

Detectives determined the assault was retaliation for an earlier altercation involving a family member of the victim.

Chance is charged with 2 counts aggravated assault, 2 counts aggravated battery with a firearm, and 2 counts armed robbery. He turned himself in at the Volusia County Branch Jail this afternoon and is being held with no bond on the armed robbery charges.
