An Ormond Beach woman died of a suspected fentanyl overdose Wednesday morning. Less than 8 hours later, her dealer was in VSO custody.

Trevin D. Smith, 32, was arrested after VSO Overdose Task Force detectives found messages on the 35-year-old victim’s phone indicating he sold her fentanyl and was offering to sell her more.

Smith agreed to meet at a 7-Eleven in Ormond Beach, where detectives were waiting. He tried to run away but was taken into custody after a brief foot chase to a nearby gas station. As he ran, he threw his phone and a small baggie of fentanyl, which were both recovered.

The overdose death investigation is ongoing. Smith is currently in jail with no bond on charges including sale/delivery of fentanyl, resisting, use of a 2-way communication device to commit a felony, driving with a suspended license, and neglect of a child, his toddler who was in the back seat of his car with no child safety seat or restraints.
