SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT AT UNIVERSTITY HIGH SCHOOL

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a threat of violence Monday that was directed at University High School in Orange City. The threat initially was made in a brief phone call to the school at 12:50 p.m. this afternoon. Following customary safety protocols, the school was placed in lock-down status and students kept in their classrooms while law enforcement investigated. The lock-down was lifted when nothing suspicious was found, but the school went back into lock-down status after the suspect called the school again.

While the Sheriff’s Office is working to identify the caller, nothing suspicious on campus has been located. Reports of a possible sighting of an armed subject on or near the school campus are untrue. Media reports that an arrest has been made also are untrue. The school bell ordinarily releasing students for the day at 2:40 p.m. was held to ensure the safety of the campus. Once it was determined that the threat wasn’t credible, the all clear was given and the school started letting out at about 2:55 p.m. The investigation into the threats is ongoing. The Orange City Police Department is assisting.
