ARMED ROBBER HOLDS UP DELAND GAS & FOOD

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a masked gunman robbed the DeLand Gas & Food Sunday night.

Deputies were dispatched to the business at 702 S. Spring Garden Avenue after the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 9:55 p.m. reporting the robbery. Deputies began converging on the scene two minutes after the 911 call came in and mounted a search in surrounding areas for the fleeing suspect. The store owner said the robber walked in to the business and went behind the cashier’s counter, pointed the gun at his face and demanded money from the cash register. The suspect made off with the money and was last seen running westbound on West Winnemissett Avenue. Deputies, however, believe the suspect had a getaway car stashed nearby. No shots were fired and no one was injured in the robbery.

Efforts to identify and locate the suspect are continuing. He was described as approximately 5’11 and weighing about 160 pounds. He was wearing dark-colored pants, a red, hooded sweatshirt, dark-colored boots, black gloves and a gray mask. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers toll-free at (888) 277-TIPS. Callers to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous and can qualify for a reward of up to $5,000. Tips also can be anonymously submitted to Crime Stoppers by downloading the smartphone app from the Crime Stoppers web site (http://www.westopcrime.com/).
