JEWELRY THEFT PROMPTS SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO ISSUE SCAM ALERT

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a scam alert after two men tricked their way into an elderly resident’s home near Daytona Beach on Monday and stole more than $4,000 worth of jewelry.

The men showed up shortly before noon on Monday at a home in the 3100-block of South Peninsula Drive, telling the 81-year-old resident that they were from the county and doing hurricane cleanup in the neighborhood. Then they proceeded to tell the woman that the work might affect the power and water service in her home and that they needed to go inside to check it out. The woman let them in, with one distracting the victim while the other headed to a bedroom. After what seemed like an extended period of time, the men then left the residence and drove away in a full-size, extended cab truck, possibly a Toyota. The theft wasn’t discovered until the victim’s daughter came home from work about five hours later and realized some of her jewelry was missing, including several bracelets, rings, pendants and gold chains valued at approximately $4,300.

Both of the suspects were white, one described as approximately 30-years-old with black hair, wearing black pants, a black t-shirt and missing a front tooth. The other was described as approximately 20-years-old, with a thin build, black hair, wearing plaid shorts and a green shirt.
