SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO KICK OFF TRAFFIC SAFETY OPERATION IN DELTONA

Motorists driving through eight heavily-traveled intersections in Deltona soon will be getting an extra dose of education along with warnings from Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies about obeying the rules of the road. And if the education and warnings don’t work, violators can expect to be ticketed. It’s all part of a beefed up, high-visibility enforcement operation designed to reduce the number of traffic crashes involving vehicles striking pedestrians and bicyclists. The Sheriff’s Office will kick off the operation in the next week. “Our roadways can be dangerous places for pedestrians,” said Sheriff Mike Chitwood, himself an avid bicyclist. “We need to reduce the carnage on our roads and make them safer for everyone.”

Funded by a $30,000 state grant, the high-visibility enforcement operation in Deltona is designed to use a multi-pronged approach involving both education and enforcement to increase compliance with traffic laws. The goal is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. “That’s what this special enforcement operation is all about. It’s about saving lives,” added Sheriff Chitwood.

About a dozen deputies have undergone specialized instruction in pedestrian and bicycle safety to prepare for the operation. It will kick off first with an educational phase, with deputies stopping violators to explain their violation and issue safety literature along with a verbal warning. After the education and warning period expires, deputies will begin ticketing violators. The operation will consist of four deputies at a time working the targeted locations for two-hour periods, with a total of 83 operations planned over the next two months. Selected based on crash data, the eight intersections all include traffic signals and marked pedestrian crosswalks. The locations are as follows:

• Courtland Boulevard and Fort Smith Boulevard
• Deltona Boulevard and DeBary Avenue
• Deltona Boulevard and Enterprise Road
• Elkcam Boulevard and Howland Boulevard
• West Finland Drive and Saxon Boulevard
• Howland Boulevard and Fort Smith Boulevard
• Saxon Boulevard and North Normandy Boulevard
• Tivoli Drive and Saxon Boulevard
