ROBBERY AT KANGAROO STORE IN BARBERVILLE UNDER INVESTIGATION

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a robber held up a Kangaroo store in Barberville late Friday night.

No one was injured in the robbery, which was reported to the Sheriff’s Office at 11:18 p.m. The suspect entered the store on South U.S. Highway 17 and demanded money from the cash register. While no weapon was seen, the suspect held his hands in his pocket to imply he was armed and threatened to shoot one of the clerks if he didn’t comply. The clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of money to the robber, who then fled out the store and was last seen on foot heading towards S.R. 40 and U.S. 17. Patrol deputies along with assistance from a K-9 unit and a Sheriff’s Office helicopter mounted a search for the suspect, but he wasn’t located.

The suspect was described as white, approximately 6’ tall and about 180 pounds and wearing khaki pants, a dark-colored sweater, dark shoes and a black hat. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida, toll-free, at (888) 277-TIPS. Information also can be submitted by downloading the smartphone app from the Crime Stoppers web site (http://www.westopcrime.com/). Callers to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous and can qualify for a reward of up to $5,000.
