SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO HOST 5 SITES FOR DRUG TAKE-BACK DAY

Help us get unwanted prescription drugs out of circulation before they wind up in the hands of someone with a drug problem. On Saturday, April 29, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will be hosting another national prescription drug take-back event. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office will be participating with five drop-off points for the public to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medication.

Since its launch in 2010, a series of national prescription drug take-back events have resulted in millions of pounds of unwanted drugs being taken out of circulation and safely discarded. Those numbers will grow with Saturday’s take-back event, as residents once again get ready to clean out their medicine cabinets and get rid of their unwanted drugs. The events are coordinated by DEA to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means for the public to voluntarily dispose of unwanted prescription drugs while also educating residents about the potential for abuse of these medications. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

The Sheriff’s Office’s drop-off sites on Saturday will be located at the agency’s district headquarters in DeLand, Deltona, DeBary, Ormond Beach and New Smyrna Beach. The sites will open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the disposal service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. For those who miss Saturday’s event, the Sheriff’s Office offers a continuous program where residents can drop off unwanted prescription drugs at a district office or make arrangements to have a deputy pick up their unwanted prescription medicine by calling the Sheriff’s Office’s Communications Center (386-248-1777). The Sheriff’s Office’s drop-off sites on Saturday will be at the following locations:

  • 1706 S. Woodland Blvd., DeLand
  • 1691 Providence Blvd., Deltona
  • 79 S. U.S. Highway 17-92, DeBary
  • 1435 U.S. Highway 1, Suite D-3, Ormond Beach
  • 101 E. Canal Street, New Smyrna Beach
