DEPUTY FIRED ON WHILE INVESTIGATING TRESPASSING COMPLAINT

A Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy escaped injury when he came under fire Sunday evening while investigating a trespassing complaint near Lake Helen. A search for the shooter is continuing.

The deputy was conducting an extra patrol along the 2000-block of East Kicklighter Road near Sand Crane Lane in response to a complaint of ongoing trespassing in a nearby wooded area. The deputy was out of his patrol car and on foot investigating the complaint when he came under fire at about 6:45 p.m. The deputy returned fire, but it’s unknown whether the suspect was struck. Numerous patrol deputies along with Sheriff’s K-9 units and a Sheriff’s Office helicopter were dispatched to the scene to cordon off the area. Orange City and Lake Helen police also were assisting with the search.
