VCSO Warns Of Phone Scammers Claiming To Be VCSO Members

VCSO WARNS OF PHONE SCAMMERS CLAIMING TO BE VCSO MEMBERS

In response to continuing reports of phone scammers attempting to pass themselves off as Volusia County Sheriff’s Office representatives, detectives are issuing a reminder that VCSO deputies and staff will never call demanding immediate payment of fees or fines or requesting any type of payment over the phone.

A recent scam attempt of this nature occurred this week, when a woman in the Ormond Beach area received two calls from males claiming to be VCSO captains. The woman was told she had outstanding traffic citations and owed thousands of dollars in fines, which she needed to settle over the phone. She was even provided a phone number to call which had a voicemail prompt indicating she’d reached the VCSO. This was a fake.

The victim responded wisely – she didn’t comply with the callers’ requests, and she contacted the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number (386-248-1777) to report the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office advises future recipients of these calls to do the same, and to suggest these callers go seek legitimate, lawful employment or other activity. A sample script is provided below:

Fake VCSO Captain: This is Captain Dan Duckworth with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. You have two outstanding traffic citations that require immediate-

You: Let me stop you right there. Why don’t you go (insert activity of your choice)
