DETECTIVES INVESTIGATING ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING THAT INJURED 12-YEAR-OLD

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is investigating an accidental shooting that injured a 12-year-old boy Saturday in the Daytona Beach area.

The shooting happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. Saturday inside a home at 1228 Leon Lane, Daytona Beach, where 12-year-old Amarion McDuffie was accidentally shot in the mouth area. He was standing outside the residence when deputies arrived. His injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.

Detectives determined McDuffie was accidentally shot by a friend, also 12 years old, whose mother, 33-year-old Amy E. Callahan, owns the gun and lives at the residence but was not home at the time.

McDuffie was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach and then airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando for further treatment.

Sheriff's detectives are investigating to determine whether charges will be filed with the State Attorney's Office in the shooting. The state Department of Children and Families also responded to the incident.
