VCSO OFFERS CITIZENS ACADEMY - LEARN ABOUT YOUR SHERIFF'S OFFICE

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to drive a sheriff’s patrol car fast – with permission?

Or get an inside look at how sheriff’s deputies are trained to deal with criminals?  Well, now’s your chance!  The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) is offering a seven-week Citizens Academy designed to teach participants about the training and tools our deputies use to keep our community safe. And, the academy helps promote a better understanding between the VCSO and residents.

If you’re interested, there’s no time to wait! Applications must be returned no later than Feb. 23. (*Applications turned in after Feb. 23 will be considered for a future Citizens Academy).  The spring Citizens Academy begins Tuesday, April 3, from 6-9 p.m., and is set to conclude Saturday, May 19, with a graduation and reception for participants.

The academy includes 10 sessions featuring instruction from deputies, practical exercises and demonstrations.  Participants will learn about our Marine, Motors, K-9, Dive Team and Air One units, along with an introduction into our patrol operations, major cases unit, Use of Force Training: Firearms Safety, Shoot/No Shoot, Defensive Tactics & Scenario, Active Shooter Training, and much more. And of course students get to ride along as deputies navigate a road course – at high speeds in all kinds of weather – and then try it themselves.

Participants must be at least 18 years old and pass a background check to attend Citizens Academy.

To request an application electronically, email Deputy Todd Raible at TRaible@vcso.us .  Return the application with your shirt size written in the top right corner and return it to the Stephen Saboda Training Center, 3901 Tiger Bay Road, Daytona Beach.

You may turn in your application: in person, by fax (386-239-6527) or scan and attach it in an email. (If you don’t return it in person, please keep the original signed copy to be turned in the first night of class.)  Hope to see you there!
