Pilot, 71, Crashes Small Plane Near Fly-In, Not Seriously Injured

The site of a small plane crash in Port Orange is in Spruce Creek Farms subdivision, about half a mile from the Spruce Creek Fly-In community where a deadly plane crash occurred just two days ago. Earlier, we gave an incorrect location. The crash site is on the other side of State Road 415 in a heavily wooded area about 50 feet from a resident’s home.

Pilot Arthur Taxman, 71, experienced a mechanical failure and was able to land in Spruce Creek Farms. It’s not clear where the flight originated from.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been notified and will take the lead in this investigation.

Sheriff's deputies, EVAC ambulance and Volusia County Fire Services responded to the crash.

Taxman was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening.

SMALL PLANE CRASHES AT THE SPRUCE CREEK FLY-IN -- 1 PERSON ON BOARD, NOT A TRAUMA PATIENT

We are on scene at the Spruce Creek Fly-In investigating the crash of a small propeller plane. One person on board, the pilot. He appears to be in his 60s or 70s.

The crash was reported at 4:20 p.m. today. Crash scene is about 50 feet into the woods behind a resident’s home.

He has a minor head injury but is NOT a trauma patient.

He is being assessed now. Not sure if he is going to be transported.

We don’t know yet whether this was an emergency landing or just a crash.
