DEPUTIES ARREST MAN, 24, AFTER WOMAN SHOT IN LEG DURING SCUFFLE

A 24-year-old man is in custody and a woman is hospitalized after shots were fired during a fight over a rifle inside a gold minivan at a home at 3075 Blaine Circle, Deltona, just before 4 p.m.

The man, Denzel Donald (DOB: 10/8/1993) returned Tuesday to the home to retrieve his girlfriend’s belongings when a group of people confronted him about an unrelated incident that occurred two weeks ago. and was not reported to law enforcement.

On Tuesday, seven people confronted Donald at the home over the incident. He told detectives he felt threatened so he attempted to get his rifle to defend himself.  That’s when the victim, 41, mother of one of those confronting the suspect, fought with him over the gun.

Several gunshots were heard during the altercation, which took place in the back of the van. One shot hit the woman in her right leg -- and the van exited the residence with the rear door open and Donald driving. In addition, a 2-year-old girl was a passenger in the van but was not injured. A neighbor called 911 and described the commotion and said he heard gunshots. He described the minivan as a gold Honda Odyssey. Within 20 minutes deputies located the minivan and had secured the occupants. The victim was taken to Central Florida Regional in Sanford with injuries considered non-life-threatening.

Donald was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail where he is being charged with one count of aggravated battery; four counts of aggravated assault and one count of child neglect. Donald is still being processed at this time. Bail information will be released later.
