Gun, Ammo, Credit Card Stolen in Deltona Car Break -- But Suspect Leaves Trail

Quick police work this weekend led sheriff’s detectives to a suspect who broke into a pickup truck in Deltona, stole a gun and ammunition and used the victim’s credit card to shop at a video game store.

Deputies were called Saturday afternoon to investigate a car break at a home on East Normandy Boulevard in Deltona. The victim realized his truck had been burglarized when his credit card company notified him that his Discover card had been used for several purchases at GameStop and Target.

The victim’s handgun and ammunition were missing, along with his wallet containing his driver’s license, conceal carry permit, military ID, credit and debit card. There were no signs of forced entry and the victim said the truck may have been unlocked.

The trail quickly led to GameStop, where the manager recalled a male using the Discover credit card to make four purchases. In addition, the suspect used a membership card issued in his name. And the manager recalled the same male filled out a job application on March 4 to work at GameStop.

On Sunday about 1:30 p.m., the suspect was spotted riding a bicycle in Deltona where he was detained and ultimately arrested. Deputies recovered the Discover card, but the handgun has not been recovered.

Dylon Santana, 20, (DOB 5-3-1998) of Deltona was charged with armed burglary of a conveyance, illegal use of credit cards to obtain goods and grand theft-firearm. He remains in custody at the Volusia County Branch Jail on $45,000 bail.

So far in 2019, 28 firearms have been stolen from unlocked vehicles in Volusia County (12 in VCSO jurisdiction). That is slightly ahead of last year’s pace – at this point in 2018, the number of guns stolen from unlocked vehicles was 22 (nine in VCSO jurisdiction).
