Late last night (11:10 p.m. Wednesday, 6/19) in Osteen, a Volusia County sheriff's deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that was traveling 88 mph in a 45 mph zone.

The vehicle fled recklessly at an estimated speed of 100 mph, heading north in the southbound lanes of State Road 415. The deputy slowed down, deactivated his emergency lights and notified Central Communications of a fleeing vehicle.

As the deputy continued north, he saw a cloud of smoke and discovered the vehicle had crashed head-on into a southbound vehicle.

Responding deputies and firefighters worked to rescue all involved in the crash, but two occupants of the fleeing vehicle did not survive. The driver whose vehicle was hit was transported to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford for treatment of his injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation.
