SPIKE IN UNLOCKED CAR BREAKS IN DELTONA LEADS TO CHARGES AGAINST SEVERAL SUSPECTS

Stolen vehicles, guns recovered; 36 of 41 cases solved over course of 1 month

A month-long spike in unlocked car breaks in Deltona recently led Volusia County sheriff’s detectives to identify several suspects responsible for about three dozen cases, with several stolen guns and vehicles recovered.

There were 41 car breaks reported from mid-June to mid-July, and those cases essentially spanned six separate crime sprees. Today, detectives have solved 36 of those 41 individual car breaks.

Among the items detectives recovered: four stolen firearms, a stolen corrections officer uniform and a fifth firearm that wasn’t directly related to the car breaks, but had its serial numbers removed.

A summary of noteworthy cases, including suspect information:

• On June 13, three individuals, two from Volusia (Jeremiah Fuller, DOB 2/19/2003, and John Nelson, DOB 8/16/2004) and one from Seminole County (Trayvion Stephens, DOB 12/11/1998), committed six car breaks. In these cases, two firearms were reported stolen, and three were recovered. All three suspects have been arrested.

• On June 27, Nathan Hargis (DOB 2/7/2003) of Seminole County committed nine car breaks and stole a corrections uniform and two firearms, all of which were recovered. Hargis was arrested.

• On July 4, a car break occurred where two individuals were seen stealing aftermarket equipment from a vehicle on Hartley Ave. The stolen property was being sold on social media and detectives conducted an operation to purchase the stolen property. Subsequently, Jose Cobian (DOB 8/24/1985) and Herzel Morales Cintron (DOB 9/1/1980), both of Deltona, were arrested and all of the stolen property was recovered.

• On July 9, three vehicles were broken into on Sylvia Drive in Deltona. The investigation led detectives to Dequan Lewis (DOB 4/18/2002) of Deltona, who was arrested.

• On July 14, a group of individuals from Orange County committed seven car breaks. They returned on July 16 and committed eight more car breaks. On those two nights, a gun and two cars with the keys left in them were also stolen. Adrian Gonzalez (DOB 1/30/2004), Carlos Carrisquillo (DOB 9/22/2004) and Tyler Ferrer (DOB 1/16/2003), all juveniles from Orange County, were tied to the crime spree and are being charged accordingly. Also, prior to this specific timeframe, on June 1, two individuals broke into a business owner’s vehicle on Deltona Boulevard and stole cash. Although the case is still active, two arrests are pending; one suspect is from Volusia and the other is from Seminole County.

The Sheriff’s Office asks all Volusia County residents to remember to lock their vehicles and not to leave valuables and especially firearms out for the taking. The recent crime spree in Deltona demonstrates that thieves are happy to take advantage of easy targets. But their arrests demonstrate that deputies and detectives will thoroughly investigate every case and pursue every lead to arrest those responsible.
