MAN, 30, REPORTS BEING SHOT IN WOODS, LATER ADMITS IT WAS SELF-INFLICTED

Suspect Who Made False Report to Face Charges

Volusia County sheriff’s deputies are investigating after a 30-year-old male reported being shot in Tiger Bay Forest this afternoon, by an unknown assailant, only to admit later that he shot himself.

Just before 4 p.m., the man called the Volusia County Communications Center to report he was shot in the leg. His location was at Bear Island and Gopher Ridge roads in Daytona Beach. Multiple agencies responded to the scene to rescue the man and search for the reported shooter. Rescuers tracking through the forest were guided by the sheriff’s helicopter, Air 1, to locate the injured man.

When he was located, the man was asked numerous times whether this was an accident or self-inflicted. Sometime later, after

units had responded from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and K-9, Air 1, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and EVAC Ambulance, the man admitted he had shot himself and fabricated his story.

The patient was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center by EVAC ambulance as a trauma alert.

The shooting remains under investigation. Detectives are gathering evidence at the scene and plan to file charges.

More information will be released when it becomes available.
