Masked, Armed Man Robs Ormond Jiffy Store But Doesn't Escape; Bystanders Detain Him

Suspect, 54, Detained After Males Throw Him to Ground

A 54-year-old man wearing a mask and latex gloves entered a Jiffy Food Store in Ormond Beach on Sunday night, displaying an apparent weapon and robbed the store just at closing time. But the robber didn’t escape – as he left the store, he was tackled outside by two bystanders who threw him to the ground and detained him until sheriff’s deputies arrived.

Anthony Robertson (DOB 12/08/1964) of Ormond Beach told deputies he frequents the store, located at 796 S. Nova Road, and knew it closed at 7 p.m. Robertson approached the store, ordered a female employee back inside and confronted a male clerk who was behind the counter.

The suspect pointed what appeared to be a weapon at the clerk and demanded “the money, give me the money.” The clerk gave Robertson an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register and the suspect fled the store.

However, two males who observed the disguised suspect stopped him – one knocked him the ground and the other beat him in the head and held him until deputies and Ormond Beach police arrived. Robertson was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital where he was admitted for treatment of head injuries.  

He is being charged with robbery with a firearm/deadly weapon, assault with intent to commit a felony, false imprisonment, and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without the intent to kill. Bail is set at $35,000. 

While interviewing Robertson, deputies discovered the “weapon” he brandished turned out to be a plastic kite string handle covered by a rag, intended to appear as a concealed firearm.
