CHRISTMAS EVE INTRUDER ARRESTED AFTER 2 INCIDENTS IN ORMOND

Suspect grabbed 11-year-old girl by the hand in one case; attempted another burglary of an occupied home nearby

A Christmas Eve intruder who entered an Ormond Beach-area home and grabbed an 11-year-old girl by the hand was arrested by responding deputies after he attempted a burglary at a second home nearby.

Steven M. Hasugulgum, 21 (DOB 5/13/1998), was outside a home on the 1900 block of Myrtle Jo Drive around 6 p.m., when the 11-year-old victim opened the rear sliding glass door and stepped out. Hasugulgum approached her, put his finger to his lips and told her to "Shh," and followed her back into the house as she retreated. He then grabbed her hand and lightly pulled her toward him.

The girl's father heard something, came to see what was happening and chased Hasugulgum from the house. Responding deputies and Ormond Beach police officers set up a perimeter, and a Sheriff's Office K-9 unit began tracking for the suspect. The incident was captured on home surveillance video, which allowed deputies to see the suspect.

At about 6:40 p.m., a woman at a house a couple streets over, on the 1900 block of Nelson Avenue, reported she saw the doorknob twisting on her locked front door. She went to check, opened the door, and was met by a stranger who met the description of Hasugulgum, acting erratic and holding a hammer. She asked if she could help him, then closed and re-locked her door. Hasugulgum ran to her SUV and tried to open it; she hit the panic alarm and he ran away.

Around 7:26 p.m., as the search continued, Hasugulgum showed up back on Myrtle Jo Drive, and deputies took him into custody.

Hasugulgum, who has an address in Daytona Beach but is a citizen of the Federated States of Micronesia, was charged with burglary with battery, attempted burglary of an occupied dwelling and attempted burglary of an unoccupied conveyance. He remained in custody at the Volusia County Branch Jail on Christmas Day, on $20,000 bond.
