DRIVER FLEEING FROM TRAFFIC STOP CRASHES IN DELTONA

A driver who fled from an attempted traffic stop for a seatbelt violation Thursday sped out of a sheriff’s deputy’s sight and later crashed into a vehicle in Deltona, injuring the other driver and causing life-threatening injury to himself.

Around 11:42 a.m., a deputy tried to pull over a white Chevrolet Camaro in the area of Elkcam and Providence boulevards. The driver fled west on Elkcam and then to Normandy Boulevard, as the vehicle was spotted by several other patrol deputies. None of the deputies initiated a pursuit.

About 7 minutes later, around 11:49 a.m., the Camaro crashed into a black Volkswagen Beetle at the intersection of Howland Boulevard and Wolfpack Run.

The Camaro driver, a 26-year-old Orlando man, was unresponsive at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Volkswagen, an 18-year-old Deltona man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both were taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, where the Camaro driver was in critical condition Thursday afternoon. His identity is not being released at this time pending notification of his family members.
