BURGLAR SHOT WHILE BREAKING INTO DELTONA HOME

A Deltona woman who caught a burglar breaking into her home early this morning warned him several times to get out, then shot him in the arm while on the phone with 911.

It was the fourth house on the 2600 block of Libby Court that 32-year-old Joseph L. Roberts (DOB 9/16/1987) tried to break into, around 5:45 a.m. He shattered a front window and climbed into the house. The woman inside, a 42-year-old mother with several teenagers in the house, called 911, saying: “I don’t want to shoot him, but I’m going to have to! Get out of my window! Get out of my window!”

The woman fired one shot, hitting Roberts in the arm, and escaped to the back yard with her three kids and three of their friends. Roberts remained in the house, where he was located by responding deputies. He was airlifted to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Video footage of the incident was captured by a home security camera.

There were no other major injuries in the incident, aside from cuts to the victim’s foot from stepping on shattered glass.

Three other residents in the immediate area on Libby Court reported burglary attempts at their homes around the same time.

Roberts is charged with four counts of burglary of an occupied dwelling and four counts of criminal mischief.

The woman who fired at him is not facing any charges.
