FATAL ORMOND SHOOTING UNDER INVESTIGATION

Volusia sheriff’s detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early this morning in the Ormond Beach area.

Deputies responded shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday to 1869 Fairland Road, Ormond Beach, where the adult victim had a gunshot wound to the upper body. The victim was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach and later pronounced deceased.

The identifying details of the victim are not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.

The death investigation is active and ongoing, and the other party involved has been cooperating in interviews with detectives. No further information is available for release at this point while the investigation continues.

Update: The victim is identified as Ashleigh Murphy, 26 (DOB 2/10/1994), who lived at the address of the incident (1869 Fairland Road, Ormond Beach). The reporting party in this case was the shooter. The shooter, whose name is not being released at this time, reported that the shooting was accidental, and has been cooperating with detectives. The Sheriff’s Office investigation is active and ongoing, and future updates will be released as they become available.

Update #2 (8/12/20): The boyfriend of a 26-year-old Ormond Beach woman who was killed in a shooting in June has been arrested on a charge of manslaughter.

Winter Richardson, 22 (DOB 8/22/1997), was taken into custody without incident today after a thorough investigation by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office Major Case Unit.

The victim, Ashleigh Murphy, was shot in the early morning hours of June 27. Detectives learned Richardson shot Murphy during a consensual sexual encounter in the home they shared. Richardson explained that Murphy indicated that she wanted him to point a revolver at her, and he did, pulling the trigger twice. The second time, the revolver fired a bullet into Murphy’s shoulder and back.

Detectives determined that Murphy’s death was caused by Richardson’s negligence and failure to check the revolver before pointing it at Murphy and pulling the trigger.

Richardson was being held on $10,000 bond Wednesday night at the Volusia County Branch Jail.
