A driver who was hospitalized after a traffic crash Saturday night in DeBary passed away from his injuries Sunday morning.

Deputies responded to calls about the erratic driving of a white Chevrolet pickup around 8 p.m. Saturday in the area of Charles R. Beall Boulevard and Fort Florida Road. Witnesses reported the truck was swerving in traffic.

A few minutes later, deputies found the truck crashed at the Highbanks Boat Ramp (499 W. Highbanks Road, DeBary), partially in the St. Johns River. A witness reported it struck a tree at high speed.

The 26-year-old male driver was breathing but unconscious when deputies arrived. Observing serious injuries, deputies broke a window to gain access and apply pressure to the driver’s injury. He was later extricated from the vehicle by Orange City Fire Rescue and transported by ambulance to an area hospital as a trauma alert.

No one else was involved or injured in the crash. The cause will be officially determined through a full crash investigation that is active at this time. The Sheriff’s Office sends condolences to the driver’s family and friends.
