CRITICAL INCIDENT BRIEFING: HOLLY HILL PD OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING

Yesterday afternoon, Holly Hill police responded to a report of a man armed with a knife threatening to harm or kill others.

The subject's mother reported he was hearing voices instructing him to kill someone, that he was violent, and that he had tried to kill her in the past.

The subject himself called 911 stating his intent to stab and kill someone. Just prior to the arrival of police, screams could be heard in the background of the call.

Body-worn camera footage of the incident shows the following:

Upon the initial officer's arrival, the subject, identified as 40-year-old Michael Anthony Edminson (DOB 5/7/1984), refused to drop a knife and charged toward the officer.

The officer backed away and continued commands for Edminson to drop the knife, but Edminson ignored them. The officer fired his weapon multiple times, causing Edminson to fall to the ground, but he maintained control of the knife, stood back up and again began closing ground on the officer. The officer, again backing away, fired multiple times, causing Edminson to fall to the ground, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the investigation of this officer-involved shooting, as is standard. Sheriff Mike Chitwood is providing this critical incident briefing, 911 audio and body-worn camera footage as part of the operational support the Sheriff's Office is providing Holly Hill PD.
