Q: What’s the speed limit on the beach?

A: 10 mph

Q: Can I bring alcohol to the beach?

A: No, alcohol and glass containers are not allowed on Volusia County beaches.

Q: Can I bring my pet to the beach?

A: Pets are not allowed on Volusia County beaches, except in 3 areas that have been designated dog-friendly beaches by Volusia County Ordinance:

  • Lighthouse Point Park in Ponce Inlet
  • Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach
  • Rockefeller Drive to Millsap Road in Ormond Beach

In these 3 areas where dogs are allowed, they must be on a leash at all times. The leash must be no longer than 6 feet. Dogs are not allowed in designated wildlife areas. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets.

Q: I see someone with a dog on a non-dog beach. Why aren’t they being cited?

A: We do routinely issue county ordinance violations for dogs on the beach. Sometimes, other enforcement duties and obligations require deputies to focus their attention on other matters.

The Americans with Disabilities Act provides that people with disabilities have a right to be accompanied by service animals in public spaces. This right applies to the public beach. Denial of access based on the presence of a service animal is a violation of federal law. In Florida, no official documentation or proof is required to be accompanied by a service animal in a public space. In many cases, the dogs that have become the subject of complaints from beachgoers or beachside residents are dogs whose owners have indicated they are service animals.

Q: Can I ride my e-bike on the beach?

A: Electric bikes and scooters are allowed on Volusia beaches, but they’re subject to the same 10 mph speed limit as traditional motor vehicles. They must be operated in a safe and prudent manner, and should not be used in heavily congested areas where you must weave between beachgoers.

Q: How loud can I play my music on the beach?

A: Music or noise that is clearly audible 50 feet from the source violates Volusia County ordinance.

Q: Can I camp overnight on the beach?

A: No, overnight camping is not allowed on Volusia County beaches.

Q: I lost an item at the beach. Is there a lost-and-found I can check?

A: If an item has been turned in to us, it will be at the VSO Coastal Division headquarters at 515 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach (next to Sunsplash Park). You can contact us at 386-258-4080.

Q: Where are all the county ordinances that apply to Volusia County beaches?

A: The entire Beach Code is available here.
